About Me

 

Hello readers! My name is Laarni Sargento, and I’m currently a social media intern at Qode Social.

A little about me – I have a B.Comm in Marketing Management from the University of Guelph, and I’m currently pursuing a Digital Marketing postgrad certificate from George Brown College. Clearly, I’ve been studying marketing for a while, but I haven’t been able to exercise what I’ve learned until joining the amazing Qode Social team.

Why Social Media?

Growing up, I was always creating things – which is why I took music lessons as a child. Today, in addition to being a marketing intern, I am also a piano instructor at my local music studio. I enjoy marketing because it allows me to show my creativity through a different canvas, whether it be through graphic design, copywriting, or content creation.

Fun fact! Seeing the immense growth of my favourite band, BTS, on Twitter sparked my fascination with social media marketing. It is truly remarkable to see a South Korean band attract fans from across the globe, thanks to their meaningful music and social media presence. 

Finding Qode Social

As part of the Digital Marketing program at George Brown College, I needed to complete a work term. I proceeded to apply to as many internships as I could. Gaining relevant marketing experience was my ultimate goal. Honestly, I wasn’t too sure about what aspect of digital marketing I wanted to explore.

While scrolling through the endless list of job postings on Indeed, I stumbled upon Qode Social’s opening for a Social Media Marketing Intern. The posting caught my attention as it emphasized interest in hiring someone who fits in well with the team culture (rather than skills).

Upon the advice of my professors, I checked out Qode Social’s Instagram page and was impressed by the overall aesthetic of their feed. Clearly, this is a team that knew what they were doing. So, I completed the necessary questionnaires (super important!) and submitted my application!

 

A Day in the Life of an Intern

As an intern, my primary tasks consist of community management and account building. I start the day by checking messages and responding to comments on various social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). Next, I proceed to account-build – which entails interacting with a brand’s potential fans and customers to increase awareness. My job essentially is to ensure that the client’s brand reaches and stays engaged with their target audience. 

Lessons Learned

Time management is vital in the wonderful world of marketing. As a community manager, I’m in charge of managing multiple accounts daily! Whenever I finish my assigned tasks, I would always let the account managers know and ask for additional work; After all, the more we do, the more we learn!

This brings me to the next thing I learned – ask questions! In the classroom, I was the kid that never raised her hand but preferred to listen and figure things out independently. Soon enough, I learned that in a fast-paced industry like social media marketing, you need to work with others to find solutions quickly and efficiently.

What I Love About Working at Qode Social

If you read through our Qode Stories series, you will notice how our team consistently gushes about the positive work environment (In fact, we can even write a whole blog post about it!).

Despite my intern experience being remote (I was never able to make it into the office due to the pandemic), I still felt welcome and connected with the team. Intern meetings with the Qode Social and Qode Media interns were always a blast! These virtual get-togethers acted as a support system and allowed our teams to stay connected with fun chats about life and work.

All of the account managers and my direct supervisor (Karley) were so warm and supportive from day one. I’m sincerely thankful for all of the opportunities the team provided so that I could go past my comfort zone and challenge myself.

Advice for Future Interns

My advice for future Qode Social interns is to:

      • Have an open mind and willingness to learn – a student mentality and natural passion for content creation will get you far
      • Try new things
      • Always ask questions

I hope this blog post sheds some light on the social media marketing intern experience. It has truly been quite the ride working with the Qode Social team, and I can’t wait for what comes next!
